Bapco, which is participating as a major energy sponsor and key exhibitor for Gulf Industry Fair through The National Oil and Gas Authority (Noga), is fast securing world leadership in international markets through its commissioning of the low sulphur diesel plant (LSDP) at the cutting-edge of refinery technology.
It is also looking to expand into new markets in compliance with the most robust international environmental, health and safety standards.
To garner more oil wealth and secure further Bahrain’s economy, Bapco has initiated a spate of projects that put it abreast leading energy companies in the use of top-notch technologies.
At the fair, Bapco will use the expo as a platform to highlight its leadership in technology and its position as a cornerstone of Bahrain’s national economy.
Its chief executive Abdul Karim Al Sayed formally endorsed the sponsorship deal with Al Hilal Group managing director Ronnie Middleton at a ceremony.
The Bahrain-based Al Hilal Group is the parent of Hilal Conferences & Exhibitions (HCE), the organiser of the fair.
Officials present at the ceremony included Bapco general manager for human resources and administration Mohamed Al-Jamea, public relations manager Mohammad Falah and Al Hilal Group general manager Geoffrey Milne.
The LSDP is a key aspect of the visionary strategic investment programme (SIP) which includes the refinery gas desulphurisation project (RGDP), lube base oil project (LBOP), sulphur handling project and waste-water treatment project.
A $1 billion refinery upgrade is also continuing apace to add value and eventually increase refinery capacity to 360,000 barrels per day. Bapco is also negotiating with Saudi Aramco to build a new and larger crude pipeline between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Among Bahrain’s most ambitious projects is the upgrade of the Awali field where oil was first discovered in 1932. Three companies – ExxonMobil, Occidental and Maersk – have been short-listed for an initiative which could cost as much as $5 billion, and it is hoped will double daily oil production from the field to around 70,000 barrels a day.
Occidental is also leading the country’s offshore exploration efforts – the US firm successfully bidding for the right to explore three of the four offshore blocks covering Bahrain’s entire offshore acreage which were offered last year. Thai state oil firm PTT Exploration won the right to explore the fourth block, the two firms selected for the expertise having participated in similar initiatives elsewhere in the region.
Wealth and opportunity continues to be generated by Bapco more than 75 years since the discovery of oil in 1932 underpinned by the continuing and intensive development of human resources through training and education.
Bapco has built its estimable reputation as a complex multinational organisation with vast experience in upstream, midstream and downstream development underpinned by world-class management and technical expertise underpinned by its technology partners and suppliers.
It is spearheading several initiatives from upgrades to the existing Awali field to major offshore exploration partnerships with international oil companies (IOCs) and ongoing negotiations with its regional neighbours to secure gas supplies for the future.
Company operations include exploration and prospecting for oil, drilling, production, refining, distribution and exports. As well as the refinery assets and its infrastructure, there are storage facilities, pipelines, a marketing terminal and a marine petroleum terminal.
Bapco continues to highlight operational excellence and responsible corporate citizenship and is aspiring to leadership in global refining technology.
The company competes successfully in the most demanding global export markets extending its portfolio of products through joint ventures that meet and exceed international environmental standards.
Safety, health and environmental programmes are implicit benchmarked by the best in the industry with Bapco’s success underlined by its recent Robert W Campbell Award from the US National Safety Council.
Bapco has taken a leadership role in enhancing Bahrain’s talents with many long-term initiatives including ‘Skills for the Workplace’, professional scholarships and academic study schemes including scholarships for the children of staff.
It is also closely involved with the Institute of Leadership and Management and the Centre of Management Excellence.
