LEWA unveils advanced OCM for smarter gas odorisation

LEWA’s new Odor Control Module combines modular automation, flow-dependent dosing control and intuitive operation.

LEWA GmbH, a world-leading brand offering positive displacement and centrifugal pumps, and complete metering systems, has launched its new Odor Control Module (OCM), the latest generation of its odorisation control technology designed to enhance safety, operational reliability and automation in gas odorisation systems.

The seventh-generation platform combines precise odorant dosing with a modular automation architecture, enabling operators to improve process transparency, simplify maintenance and accommodate future system expansion.

Gas odorisation is a critical safety process that ensures gas leaks can be detected quickly and reliably. Developed for these demanding applications, the OCM forms part of LEWA’s integrated odorisation system, bringing together the company’s diaphragm metering pumps, low-flow measurement technology, odorisation nozzles and control systems within a single platform.

At the core of the new system is an open automation platform based on industry-standard PLC and HMI technology. The platform delivers gas flow-dependent odorant dosing, helping operators achieve consistent odorisation performance while meeting regulatory and operational requirements.

Next-generation LEWA OCM simplifies gas odorisation operations and maintenance.

Suitable for both new installations and retrofit projects, the OCM can control up to two independent odorisation lines from a single platform, reducing engineering effort, installation complexity and overall project costs. The system is also backward compatible with existing LEWA 19-inch installations, allowing operators to modernise assets while protecting previous investments.

A key enhancement is the introduction of a graphical Human Machine Interface (HMI), providing operators with an intuitive process flow display, guided parameter configuration, plain-language alarms and status notifications, and role-based user access. The interface is designed to improve visibility of system operations, reduce training requirements and minimise the potential for operator error.

The modular design further supports serviceability, with plug-in, front-access hardware modules enabling faster maintenance and replacement. This approach helps reduce downtime and allows many service activities to be carried out without specialist PLC expertise.

Built using widely available industrial-standard components, the OCM supports modern communication protocols, including Profinet and Modbus RTU, while offering long-term hardware availability. The platform has been designed to comply with current and emerging regulatory requirements, including CE, EMC, RoHS, ATEX, relevant DVGW standards and the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).

The OCM is intended for use across gas distribution networks, transfer and pressure regulation stations, redundant odorisation systems, modernisation projects and new installations requiring advanced automation capabilities. According to LEWA, the system provides a scalable platform that supports the complete lifecycle of odorisation systems, from planning and commissioning through to operation, maintenance and future upgrades.
