Sensa, a leading provider of fibre optic temperature-sensing and monitoring solutions for critical assets around the world, is involved with two major projects in the Middle East.

Its fibre optic solution has been selected by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority and the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation for temperature monitoring of high voltage power cables as part of developments in new energy infrastructure, says a company spokesman.
Sensa’s fibre optic solution utlises the latest in technology to provide real-time data regarding temperature measurements over many thousands of individual points, along the entire length of the power cable for distances up to 30 km using a single fibre. The continuous analysis of temperature measurements enables problems to be identified before they become significant.
Using the principles of Optical Time Domain Reflectometry, pulses of light are fired through the fibre optic cable. These pulses lose energy through scattering during transit as they pass down the fibre through several mechanisms such as vibrations and density fluctuations. The combination of variations in backscattered light intensity and time domain reflectometry are measured to create accurate temperature against distance profiles, the spokesman explained.
“With over three decades of experience, Sensa delivers fast, accurate high-resolution measurements in real-time, for fire detection, power circuit temperature monitoring, trace heat monitoring and leak detection systems for pipeline and cryogenic storage,” he spokesman said.
“Sensa operates throughout the entire value circle – from concept and development to installation and service. It delivers reliable and robust solutions to meet the varying needs of its clients and partners.”
Part of the Schlumberger group, Sensa is the centre of excellence for fibre optic technology for Schlumberger worldwide. Headquartered in the UK and with offices in Houston, Dubai and Singapore, it operates in over 60 countries. Its clients include ABB, Nexans, LS Cable and Saudi Cable.
