EMSTEEL builds the digital steelworks of the future

EMSTEEL Group is aligning its digital transformation strategy with the Factory Forward UAE initiative

Aligning with the UAE’s Factory Forward agenda, EMSTEEL is combining AI, private 5G, advanced analytics and low-carbon innovation to transform heavy industry. The result is a smarter, more efficient and more sustainable manufacturing model that is reinforcing the country’s position as a global industrial hub.

As the UAE accelerates its transition towards a knowledge-based, technology-driven economy, industrial leaders are being called upon to do more than increase production. They are expected to enhance efficiency, embrace advanced technologies, reduce emissions and strengthen national industrial resilience. Few companies embody this transformation as comprehensively as EMSTEEL.

The Abu Dhabi-headquartered steel and building materials producer is positioning itself at the forefront of the UAE’s industrial evolution through a wide-ranging digital transformation programme aligned with the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology’s (MoIAT) Factory Forward UAE initiative. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI), private 5G connectivity, advanced automation, immersive virtual reality (VR) training and data-driven operations, EMSTEEL is creating a blueprint for the factory of the future while advancing the country’s industrial competitiveness and decarbonisation ambitions.

Building the Digital Factory

For EMSTEEL, digital transformation is no longer a standalone technology initiative. It has become a core business strategy underpinning productivity, competitiveness and sustainability across its operations.

The group’s approach closely aligns with MoIAT’s Factory Forward UAE programme, which aims to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies and Fourth Industrial Revolution solutions across the nation’s manufacturing sector.

Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL

“Factory Forward UAE reflects an integrated strategic vision for advancing the national industrial sector by accelerating the development of interconnected industrial ecosystems that rely on data and artificial intelligence to enhance production capabilities, efficiency and competitiveness,” says Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL.

“At EMSTEEL, we translate this direction into practical applications that increase productivity, strengthen operational resilience and improve the efficiency of energy and resource use, while empowering our national talent and developing their capabilities. This stems from our belief in the vital role of technological transformation in building a more sustainable UAE industrial sector capable of growing and reaching global markets.”

Operating 14 manufacturing facilities with annual production capacities of 3.5 million tonnes of steel and 4.6 million tonnes of cement, EMSTEEL is leveraging advanced technologies to manage a complex industrial ecosystem that serves more than 70 international markets.

At the heart of this transformation is a digital ecosystem that collects and processes data from more than 120,000 operational points across production assets. EMSTEEL’s unified analytics platform, Al Manara, provides over 30 interactive dashboards, delivering real-time operational intelligence that strengthens planning, production and resource management.

The company has also deployed nine AI-powered applications across commercial operations, plant management and supply chain activities. More than 25 machine-learning models are now being used for applications ranging from demand forecasting and pricing optimisation to production planning and energy management. These tools are enabling faster decisions, improved operational efficiency and greater resilience in fluctuating market conditions.

Supporting this digital infrastructure are investments in private 5G networks, advanced automation technologies and immersive VR-based workforce training programmes. Together, these initiatives form a cornerstone of EMSTEEL’s Digital Strategy 2025-2030, aimed at creating highly connected, intelligent industrial operations while equipping employees with next-generation digital skills.

AI Beyond Productivity

While AI is increasingly being adopted to boost manufacturing efficiency, EMSTEEL is also leveraging the technology to strengthen environmental performance and workplace safety.

One of the group’s most notable innovations is an AI-enabled environmental monitoring system that combines intelligent camera networks with live weather data. The platform continuously tracks dust emissions, predicts dispersion patterns and issues real-time alerts, allowing rapid intervention when necessary.

This system complements the company’s Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), which provides direct emissions reporting and delivers comprehensive environmental oversight across operations. The result is a proactive approach to environmental management that reflects the growing role of digital technologies in supporting industrial sustainability.

On the health and safety front, EMSTEEL has developed an AI-powered HSE RAG Advisor chatbot that gives employees rapid access to information contained within more than 500 specialised health, safety and environmental documents. By improving access to critical operational knowledge, the tool supports faster and more informed decision-making across the workforce.

Digitalisation

EMSTEEL’s technology strategy is closely linked to its sustainability agenda. Rather than treating digitalisation and decarbonisation as separate initiatives, the company is using advanced technologies to improve energy efficiency, optimise resource consumption and reduce emissions.

The results are already visible. Between 2019 and 2025, EMSTEEL reduced absolute emissions from its steel operations by 34 per cent. In 2025, the group achieved its lowest steel emissions intensity since 2019 at 0.637 tonnes of CO² equivalent per tonne of steel produced. Clean electricity accounted for nearly 89 per cent of power consumption across the steel business.

These achievements have earned international recognition. In 2026, EMSTEEL was named a worldsteel Sustainability Champion for the third consecutive year, making it the only steel producer in the MENA region to receive the distinction.

The company is simultaneously advancing new decarbonisation pathways through carbon capture, circular economy initiatives and low-carbon product development. A strategic agreement with Gulf Cryo is exploring an integrated carbon capture, utilisation and storage value chain, while initiatives under the company’s TrueGreen sustainability platform continue to expand the use of lower-carbon materials and manufacturing processes.

Innovation Strategy

Beyond operational excellence, EMSTEEL’s innovation strategy is helping strengthen the UAE’s broader industrial ecosystem.

A clear example is the launch of ES600, the highest-strength steel rebar currently produced in the UAE. Developed for demanding infrastructure and high-rise construction projects, the product enables steel consumption reductions of up to 24 per cent, lowering both material requirements and associated carbon emissions. EMSTEEL estimates that every 10,000 tonnes of ES600 can eliminate approximately 12,000 tonnes of CO²emissions, demonstrating how advanced manufacturing can contribute directly to sustainability objectives.

The launch reflects the company’s wider commitment to supporting the UAE’s industrial development agenda by producing higher-value, locally manufactured products that enhance national self-sufficiency and competitiveness.

Strong Foundations

EMSTEEL’s digital transformation is also translating into business performance. The company reported Q2 2026 revenues of AED2.4 billion, up 11 per cent year-on-year, while EBITDA increased 67 per cent to AED457 million. Net profit surged 157 per cent to AED262 million, highlighting the benefits of operational efficiency, disciplined cost management and strong domestic demand.

These results demonstrate how investments in digital technologies, advanced manufacturing and sustainability are creating tangible commercial value while reinforcing EMSTEEL’s role as one of the UAE’s leading industrial champions.

A Model for Industry 4.0

As Factory Forward UAE seeks to accelerate the adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies across the nation’s manufacturing base, EMSTEEL offers a compelling example of how digital transformation can deliver economic, operational and environmental benefits simultaneously.

By combining private 5G connectivity, AI-driven operations, advanced analytics, environmental intelligence and immersive workforce training, the company is building a manufacturing model designed for the future. Importantly, this transformation is not only improving productivity and competitiveness but also supporting the UAE’s ambitions for a technologically advanced, low-carbon industrial economy.

For EMSTEEL, digitalisation is no longer simply about working smarter. It is becoming the foundation upon which the next generation of UAE industry will be built.
