With the aim of improving the environment and the general quality of life, United Technical Services (UTS), a pioneering company based in the UAE since 1961, is introducing to the market a new technology of integrated solutions for dry and wet waste systems for cruise liners and ferries.

Being type-approved by IMO-Marpol, the new technology takes into account growing environmental concerns and aims at further improving the company’s product range and meeting customers’ needs even better.
The new system was developed by UTS’ partner EVAC, a part of the French group Zodiac which has recently acquired the Norwegian company Norsk Inova AS. The latter is a leading supplier of total dry waste and garbage-handling systems for the cruise industry. Its headquarters is located in Notodden, Norway, and it has a sales and service office in Miami, USA.
Ziad Al Askari, business development manager at UTS, observes: “Under international law, Marpol annex V, the committee on shipboard pollution control places limits on ocean discharge of solid waste materials. Plastics may not be discharged into the sea at all.
“Paper, including cardboard, metal and glass, may not be released in special areas which include the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Greater Caribbean including the Gulf of Mexico and other important areas.
“The purchase of Norsk Inova by Zodiac ensures that EVAC has the necessary technologies to handle both dry and organic waste onboard ships and help to protect our fragile Arabian Gulf waters.”
By investing in EVAC and Norsk Inova, both specialised companies and leading brands in their fields, Zodiac will be creating a powerhouse of waste management technology for ships, said a statement. “This is a great opportunity for UTS who will introduce the new technology in the UAE. The whole package, in fact, creates opportunities for future cruise liners and ferries to be in charge of their entire waste management process, changing the view that waste management is made up of individual components by showing that it can be a complete, efficient, safe and environmentally-friendly process.”
Imad Hseino, marketing and sales manager at UTS, commented: “As United Technical Services is the only distributor in the GCC of EVAC’s products and services, this new technology will enable us to serve a wider range of marine sector needs according to the latest international terms and standards, through our highly experienced engineering team.”
Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, UTS has branches in other emirates and has been doing business throughout the GCC region.
