Starlinks and Swisslog are helping build a next-generation aviation MRO ecosystem in Saudi Arabia
The expansion of Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector is drawing increasing attention to the materials handling infrastructure that underpins efficient aircraft fleet operations. While new airports, airlines and MRO facilities often capture the headlines, the ability to store, retrieve and distribute thousands of critical components quickly and accurately is becoming just as important to operational performance.
Against this backdrop, Gulf-based logistics and supply chain solutions provider Starlinks has selected Swisslog to deliver a major warehouse automation programme for a new aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Saudi Arabia. The project underscores the growing role of advanced materials handling technologies in supporting the Kingdom’s ambitions to become a leading aviation and logistics hub.
From warehousing to material flow
The programme forms part of a wider supply chain solution for a leading Middle Eastern aviation company and will be implemented at a new MRO facility located within one of the region’s key aviation centres.
For the materials handling sector, the project is notable for its focus on end-to-end material flow rather than standalone storage automation. Starlinks is overseeing the overall supply chain design and operational implementation, while Swisslog will provide the automation technologies and software that connect inventory storage, transport and fulfilment activities across the facility.
The integrated solution combines a high-density AutoStore system with pallet automation and Swisslog’s SynQ software platform, creating a coordinated environment capable of managing both small, high-value aviation components and larger palletised inventory.

Smart logistics takes flight in Saudi aviation
Meeting the demands of aviation logistics
MRO operations present some of the most demanding materials handling challenges. Facilities must manage thousands of SKUs, maintain precise inventory accuracy and ensure rapid access to parts that can determine whether an aircraft remains grounded or returns to service.
To support these requirements, the AutoStore installation will provide high-density storage for spare parts, using autonomous robots to retrieve bins from a compact grid system. The approach maximises storage capacity while reducing travel distances and retrieval times.
Complementing the system is a comprehensive pallet automation solution featuring Vectura stacker cranes, ProMove pallet conveyors, a pallet shuttle car, inbound transport systems and picking stations. Together, these technologies automate the movement of goods from receiving and inspection through to storage and order fulfilment.
The result is a highly integrated materials handling operation designed to minimise manual intervention while maintaining consistent and reliable inventory availability.
Building scalability into the supply chain
As aviation activity across the Gulf continues to grow, supply chains are being required to handle increasing volumes of parts and materials without compromising service levels.
Automated storage and retrieval systems offer a practical response to these pressures, enabling operators to increase throughput, optimise space utilisation and improve inventory visibility. For aviation operators in particular, these capabilities are critical as fleets expand and maintenance requirements become more complex.
“Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in aviation, logistics and industrial capabilities,” said Alexander Komianos, Managing Director UAE & Solutions at Starlinks. “These developments require supply chains that can scale efficiently and support increasingly demanding operations. By combining our logistics expertise with proven automation technologies from Swisslog, we are delivering a robust foundation for long term growth and operational excellence.”

A growing market for warehouse automation
The project also highlights a broader trend reshaping the regional materials handling market. Operators are increasingly deploying automated storage systems, robotics, conveyor technologies and warehouse execution software to improve productivity and resilience while addressing labour, space and operational efficiency challenges.
According to Rami Younes, General Manager, Swisslog Middle East, the combination of high-density storage, pallet automation and intelligent software is becoming increasingly important as supply chains grow in scale and complexity.
“We are proud to support Starlinks on this important programme,” he said. “The combination of AutoStore technology, pallet automation and SynQ software will help ensure high inventory availability, efficient use of space and reliable material flow. These capabilities are essential as aviation supply chains continue to grow in scale and complexity across the region.”
As Saudi Arabia continues to invest in aviation infrastructure, projects such as this demonstrate how modern materials handling systems are evolving from supporting functions into strategic assets. For MRO operators, the ability to move, store and retrieve parts efficiently is no longer just a warehouse consideration. It is increasingly a competitive differentiator that can directly influence operational performance, aircraft availability and long-term growth.
