Officials at the Aramco and Quantinumm MoU signing ceremony.
Saudi Arabia’s drive to build a globally competitive, technology-enabled industrial economy has received another boost with the signing of a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Aramco and Quantinuum, one of the world’s leading quantum computing companies.
The agreement will see the two organisations explore opportunities to apply quantum computing to industrial use cases, exchange technical expertise, and lay the groundwork for potential research collaboration focused on fault-tolerant quantum computing.
For Saudi industry, the significance extends beyond emerging technology. The collaboration reflects a broader effort to position the Kingdom at the forefront of next-generation industrial innovation, supporting the digital transformation of energy, manufacturing, and process industries that form the backbone of the national economy.
Under the MoU, Aramco and Quantinuum will conduct preliminary technical onboarding activities and identify operational and scientific challenges where quantum computing could provide future advantages. Areas of focus include tackling highly complex problems linked to energy systems, optimization, and digital transformation initiatives.
The initiative aligns with Aramco’s wider strategy of leveraging advanced technologies to improve operational efficiency, strengthen innovation capabilities, and prepare for future industrial requirements. As one of the world’s largest integrated energy and chemicals companies, Aramco has increasingly invested in technologies ranging from artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to robotics and digital platforms, viewing them as critical enablers of long-term competitiveness.
Quantum computing, while still in its developmental stages, is widely regarded as a potentially transformative technology for industries that require vast computational power. Future quantum systems could help model complex chemical processes, optimize logistics networks, improve resource management, and accelerate scientific discovery across sectors such as energy, chemicals, materials, and manufacturing.
For Saudi Arabia, these capabilities could play an important role in advancing Vision 2030 objectives aimed at diversifying the economy, fostering innovation-led growth, and developing high-value industrial capabilities.
“Organizations that expect to benefit from quantum computing need to begin developing their expertise, algorithms and workflows today,” said Dr. Rajeeb Hazra, President and CEO of Quantinuum. He noted that the agreement establishes a framework for knowledge sharing, identifying strategic industrial challenges, and preparing for deeper research collaboration.
By combining Aramco’s engineering and scientific expertise with Quantinuum’s integrated hardware and software capabilities, the companies aim to build a foundation for future research as quantum technologies continue to mature.
