Demag Cranes and Components (ME) FZE recently supplied cranes to Union Iron and Steel Company, Abu Dhabi, which is now manufacturing deformed reinforced steel bars.
Union Iron and Steel has various interests with a strong presence in precast, concrete and plastic pipes, agriculture and contracting. Its steel materials business copes with present construction material requirements in the Gulf. The steel rolling mill will be producing deformed rebars of 8 mm to 32 mm in diameter and 6 m to 12 m in length. The rolling mill’s capacity is 300,000 tonnes per year and it is being installed by VAI Pomini Siemens. The material handling solution is being supplied by Demag. The materials handled are billets and rebar bundles.
Efficient and reliable material-handling systems are needed to fulfil the industrial requirements of a steel rolling mill. From the start, it was clear this could only be done with a number of cranes. Indeed, cranes are still the most versatile material-handling method. For this reason, Demag was given the task of designing the crane configuration that can satisfy these needs, according to a Demag spokesman.
The result is the supply of three double-girder overhead travelling cranes from the Demag SteelMaster range with magnet systems for the production shop and two double-girder overhead travel-ling cranes for the adjacent support/maintenance facility. This was based on details supplied by the customer with reference to the dimensions, types of material to be handled, frequency of operational intake of the production line and output/overall plant capacity. Together with Union Iron and Steel, Demag was successful in supplying the optimum solution to suit the requirements.
The three SteelMaster cranes have a safe working load under the magnets of 12t and a span of 24.6 m. The cranes, which travel, lift and lower at high speeds, can be operated from an air-conditioned cabin or by radio remote control. To facilitate smooth handling and to avoid load sway, lifting and lowering motions are performed under frequency-inverter control. The cranes are equipped with one open winch cab with two rope lead offs, which are arranged at a specific distance to each other, to carry the respective magnet spreader.
Two types of magnet systems have been supplied, one to handle the intake of cold billets and another to handle the deformed reinforced bar bundles at a temperature of around 250 degrees C. The PLC-based controls are designed so that all three cranes can accommodate any type of the supplied magnet system. This interchangeability offers a great flexibility to the production shop in planning and achieving the production schedule for corresponding shift/day. As all three cranes are operating on the same crane runway, Demag integrated optical distance-maintaining systems, which ensure that safe distances are maintained between the cranes.
The adjacent bay to the production area is the support/maintenance facility for the rolling mill equipment, which is equipped with two Demag standard double-girder overhead travelling cranes, fitted with the new DR rope hoist, including CAN-Bus controls, with a safe working load of 10 t and a span of 24.6 m. The supplied DR hoists are rated for a service life of 1,900 hours at full load, which is 20 per cent above the FEM classification of 2 m. Therefore owners have the benefit from greater availability and improved operating efficiency.
Since the cranes are essential for the production of the whole plant, an important requirement of Union Iron is the availability. In this respect the close proximity to Demag with its very well-trained and equipped service team is also important.
