
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has signed contracts for six mega projects for the production of electricity and desalinated water and the creation of reservoirs, main substations and a DFO pipeline with major national and international companies for a total cost of Dh12 billion ($3.26 billion).
Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, Dewa’s MD & CEO, signed the contracts on behalf of Dewa whilst the executive presidents and managers signed contracts on behalf of their respective companies.
Al Tayer provided some details of the projects.
The first project involves constructing a power and desalination station at Jebel Ali (M Station) at a cost of Dh10.15 billion. The M Station power package comprises a combined cycle cogeneration power plant costing Dh6.2 billion. Equipment includes six Siemens V94.3 A gas turbines, six Doosan HRSGs and three Alstom steam turbines. The gross output will be 2,000 MW. The project will be completed by mid-2010.
The desalination package will consist of eight desalination units with an output of 17.5 MIGD per unit and four boilers with total output of 140 MIGD. Completion time is the beginning of June 2010. The third contract costing Dh155 million relates to the construction of a DFO pipeline from the Jebel Ali Free Zone to Aweer Power Station. It consists of a 20-inch DFO pipeline and involves various other work including civil and mechanical and the provision of cooling, protection and leak-detection systems.
The fourth project entails constructing a three-phase reservoir at Mushrif with a total storage capacity of 180 MIG. The Dh620 million contract includes civil and mechanical jobs and interconnection to the existing pipelines power supply. Completion time: April 2009.
The fifth contract involves the construction of two 400/132 kV substations at Barsha and Horse Race at the total cost of Dh816 million. Completion is by the end of 2009.
The sixth contract relates to setting up a main transformer station 400/132 kV in the Techno Park area for supplying electricity to the park as well as to Industrial City, Jebel Ali and Airport City. The project will be completed by February 2010.
The contracts were signed during the Water, Energy Technology and Environmental Exhibiltion (Wetex), organised by Dewa and held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre for three days from March 11.
This year’s event was host to some 680 participants, an increase of 13 per cent over last year. Local, national, regional and international companies from more than 22 countries worldwide showcased their products across 15,000 sq m of floor space.
