Turkey has reiterated its plan to set up a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Bahrain.
Turkish Health Minister Dr Recap Akdag, who headed a 20-member delegation on a visit to Bahrain, said the proposed unit was part of the BD1.1 billion ($2.91 billion) projects being discussed between the two countries and could be a reality soon. He was speaking following a meeting held with ministry officials recently.
The proposal was first mooted in February 2005 when the Turkish Industry and Trade Minister Ali Coskun visited Bahrain and discussed it with the Health Minister Dr Nada Haffadh.
Akdag said Turkish businessmen were also interested in setting up hospitals and care centres in Bahrain. Stressing on more Turkish-Bahrain collaborations, he hailed the training facilities in Bahrain and said Turkey could benefit from them.
“The Arabian Gulf University and the College of Health Sciences are the two places which we would want to take advantage of,” he said. The ministry’s Health Information director Ebrahim Nawakhda said the pharmaceutical plant was on top of the agenda.
He said Turkey also proposed to supply Bahrain with state-of-the-art medical equipment and the offer was under consideration.
