A view of the company’s production facilities

UAE Cables manufacturer Ducab has won two major contracts, one of which is to supply the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (Dewa) power station and desalination plant in Jebel Ali and the other to supply the Kuwait Oil Company’s effluent water disposal plant.

The contract for the Jebel Ali power station is worth Dh52 million  ($14.1 million). Ducab will design, manufacture and supply all cable systems for the Dewa project. Dewa awarded the package to a consortium led by Mitsubishi Corporation and also consisting of Toshiba Corporation, Fisia Italimpianti SpA, Areva (Alsthom) and ETA Group. The engineering consultant for the project is Lahmeyer International of Germany.
“Ducab had been the choice of Dewa’s power and desalination plant projects from Station E in 1995 to Station K in 2002 and had successfully fulfilled the cable systems contract every time by committing fully to the specifications laid by the client’s engineers,” a company spokesman said.
Colin Paskins, Ducab managing director, said: “Ducab’s relationship with Dewa is built upon the company’s ability to deliver high-quality products in a timely manner. The successful completion of the projects in the past for Dewa positioned Ducab as the strong contender for the new project.
“However, the new contract offered fresh challenges since an innovative cable system needed to be designed specifically for this project. Ducab met this challenge well by meeting the high standards of cable performance specification.”
The contract for the KOC project was valued at Dh24 million. The contract, awarded by Daelim Industrial Co Ltd, an engineering, procurement and construction company in Korea, requires Ducab to supply power and control cables.
Under contract terms, Ducab will supply 6.35/11 kV lead-sheathed power cables and pilot cables for the project in Southeast Kuwait. Ducab won the contract amidst stiff competition from other GCC and international cable manufacturers through a stringent selection process by KOC.
“Ducab’s uncompromising quality focus, timely delivery and strategic location ultimately won the project,” said S I Chang, president, Sangmin Consultancy Trading, a leading Korean EPC consultancy that was a consultant for the KOC project.
Commented Yasser Hussein, OGP and exports manager, Ducab: “OGP projects are extremely vital to the growth of the oil industry, which in turn ensures a vibrant world economy. These projects must be executed with extreme care and the use of immaculate components is of prime concern to any contractor. The combination of assured quality and prompt delivery schedules made the company the ideal choice for KOC’s effluent water disposal project.”
The competitive bidding for the project was co-ordinated through Rezayat, Ducab’s business associate in Kuwait. The award of the Kuwait contract was another example of Ducab’s success in the international market.
“Ducab is ideally located to meet the varied needs of customers in the Middle East, Africa, South and East Asian markets,” said the company spokesman. “In 2003, the company registered an impressive growth marked by a successful entry into the Indian Subcontinent and Tanzanian markets with stellar orders.”
Currently, Ducab is going through a major expansion phase, with a new facility coming up in Abu Dhabi. The subsequent increase in capacity is aimed at driving an increase in the company’s already substantial market share.
Established in 1979, Ducab is described as the first purpose-built cable manufacturing company in the UAE and is equally owned by the Government of Dubai and Government of Abu Dhabi. Its product range covers low voltage power cables, control and auxiliary cables, wiring and lead-sheathed cables, Ducab Powerplus medium voltage cables (up to 33 kV) and Ducab Smokemaster, low smoke and fume zero halogen cables.
Ducab is also well known as the distributor of Ducab Connect cable accessories and is certified to ISO 9000: 2000 quality management systems and ISO 14001 environment protection systems.
