The Masafi plant in Ras Al Khaimah
Masafi Mineral Water Company, the producer of bottled mineral water in the UAE and Gulf, has announced a seven per cent growth in 2003 over the previous year.
It claimed it had a market share of 46 per cent in the UAE and 51 per cent in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Masafi, which also has a presence in the tissue industry, said it registered 16 per cent growth in soft facial tissues.
Masafi is well known in the Gulf for its mineral and bottled water. For thousands of years, the Ras Al Khaimah mountains have been a source of pure natural mineral water. From the peaks, the water filters through layers or rock, gravel, green crystals and clay, thereby absorbing the beneficial properties of natural minerals. This finally forms a deep aquifer that is the natural source of Masafi water. The water from the springs is pumped from underground wells through stainless steel pipes into stainless steel tanks. The water is then bottled at source in a 250,000 sq m state-of-the-art plant.
The company has been projecting the line that drinking about three litres of pure natural Masafi mineral water everyday will “contribute to the minerals required for one’s body to be healthy” and keep it hydrated in a hot desert climate.
The microbiological purity and mineral content of Masafi Mineral Water is well within the range specified by the WHO (World Health Organisation), USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), FDA (Food and Drug Administration), EU (European Union), IBWA (International Bottled Water Association) and ABWA (Asia Bottled Water Association). Masafi is a member of both IBWA and ABWA.
Masafi became the first natural mineral water company in the UAE to be awarded the top NSF certification by NSF International, the only globally recognised third-party certifier of bottled water. Masafi also was awarded the HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) certification and the ISO 9001:2000 certification for maintaining a high-standard quality management system. The Masafi plant, which can produce more than 120,000 bottles per hour, is equipped with a technically advanced laboratory for water analyses and chemical and microbiological tests carried out by qualified professionals. The company stresses that all production equipment is sourced from leading global industry leaders.
