Engineering solutions provider Automech Engineering Co LLC describes itself as a “one-stop” shop for the production, marine, transport, construction and oilfield sectors.

Set up as a small outfit in 1991when the UAE’s infrastructure development was in full swing and demand was high for engineering products and services, the company has grown over the years to register sales of $24 million per year.
Automech is well known in the industry as a manufacturer of precision gears up to 3 m, but also produces de-watering pump sets, industrial heaters, shearing blades, plastic dies and moulds, press tools, jigs and fixtures, among other things. Based in Dubai’s Al Awir Industrial Area, its production and engineering facilities are spread out   in four locations and occupy a total of 200,000 sq m. Some 400 staff are now in Automech’s employ.
The company counts among its specialties heavy fabrication; general machining; horizontal, vertical and in-line boring; horizontal and vertical honing; metal stitching; metal spraying, and dynamic balancing. It has invested recently in the latest CNC machine tools, adding recently four medium- to large-sized CNC milling machines, six CNC lathes, a CNC wire-EDM and a large plunger EDM.
“The addition of high-tech machinery has given Automech an edge over its competitors who are still dependent on conventional machines,” said Automech Group chairman Jagjit Gouri.
“The company has full capabilities to service or refurbish all types of workshop machinery, production machinery, pumps, compressors, hydraulic equipment, valves and electrical systems,” he added.
Other companies in the group are Automech De-Watering & Land Draining LLC, Automech Marine & Engineering Services LLC, Gouri Trading Company and Alloy Steel Trading LLC. All the group companies complement each other’s products and services. “With the support of our group companies and eight operational divisions we’re in a continuous process of expansion,” Gouri said. The company operates through the auto, machine shop, fabrication, heater manufacturing, hydraulic, ship repair, heat exchanger and hardware divisions.
“Our engineers and technicians can develop all kinds of equipment and special purpose machines in a highly diversified range of applications. There are many such machines in use in the local market. The inspection department under the machine shop division inspects and monitors the entire manufacturing process to ensure quality products. The division is fully equipped and calibrated to military standards,” Gouri emphasised.
The fabrication division has been responding to the needs of a wide range of industries including automotive, food handling, automated assembly, construction, foundry and pharmaceutical.
Among products emerging from the heater manufacturing division are cartridge, split cartridge and ceramic-insulated band heaters as well as oil and water immersion heaters and melting pots and tanks.
According to Gouri, the company’s ship repair division has “earned credibility in the maritime business and offshore supplies and services sector”.
“The division specialises in repairing a whole range of parts from small pins to huge propellers,” he says. “It provides all sorts of services from the rebuilding of motor parts to repairs of deck equipment, steering and rudder gears, pipes and tubes, hull structures and radio and navigational equipment and fabrication of technical products in rubber.”
In a recent project for the UAE Navy, the company refurbished and serviced a slipway at the Abu Dhabi dock. 
Describing activities in the heat exchanger division, Gouri said it specialised in the machining, drilling, reaming and grooving of tube sheets.
“This division of the company is a leading manufacturer of equipment used in heat transfer technology and serves direct users such as oil refineries, fertiliser plants, petrochemical refineries, pharmaceuticals, food processing and power plant sectors. We successfully completed a project of Sidem Company, Abu Dhabi, to prepare 140 tube sheets (70 Exchanger) in 14 units of the Taweelah Desalination Plant. We have been working in close coordination with organisations such as Lloyds Register Industrial Services, EIL, Bureau Veritas, UDHE, PDIL, Jacobs H & G Ltd, Chemtex, Davy Power Gas and Baux Council”
The hardware division maintains stocks of industrial tools, spare parts and components in its showroom. The stocks are imported and distributed to a range of industries. The company has been procuring most of its hardware, tools and equipment supplies from reputed manufacturers in Europe, especially Italy, Sweden and Spain. Explaining one of the secrets of Automech’s success, Gouri says: “Our procurement department maintains constant contacts with our suppliers and other emerging manufacturers in various countries and tries to get the best quality products at the best possible price, all to the benefit of our customers.”
The company has also been keeping a strict watch on quality and is currently pursuing the ISO 9000:2000 certification.
Gouri gave a brief introduction on the activities of some group companies.
Gouri Trading Company LLC stocks, imports and exports new and used machine tools from all over the world. Established in 1981, it boasts a stock of more than 4,000 machines and customers from the Middle East, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent.
Alloy Steel Trading LLC has been supplying its products throughout the GCC over a number of years. Within its product range are bars and pipes made of stainless steel, galvanised steel and alloys of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Automech Dewatering & Land Draining Company has been “setting high standards” in its two years of operations. “Within this period, the company has manufactured and supplied around 100 pumps that are running successfully all across the UAE,” the chairman said. The company also stocks dewatering accessories and has a repertoire of testing equipment.
