Larsen & Toubro Ltd, a $11.7-billion technology, engineering and construction group, said it has secured major EPC orders from GCC countries aggregating Rs.25.6 billion ($578.6 million), which include the construction of a 225 km overhead transmission line in Saudi Arabia and a large Qatar order for substations.
The Mumbai-based company said its fully owned subsidiary Larsen & Toubro Saudi Arabia LLC secured a significant order valued at Rs 5.97 billion from Saudi Electricity Company for the construction of a 225 km 380 kV transmission line for the Haramain High Speed Railway system that links Islam’s holy cities of Makkah and Medina via Jeddah.
The scope of work includes engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of towers, conductors, insulators, optical ground wire (OPGW) and fittings. The project has to be completed in 24 months.
The company also bagged two EPC orders amounting to Rs 4.97 billion from the UAE. The first one worth Rs 4.22 billion came from Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) for the construction of five medium voltage substations and associated 33 kV cabling works for ADPC’s Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone project. The company has to complete the project in 18 months.
ADPC is responsible for the development of the Khalifa Port Project by 2012, which will replace the existing Mina Zayed port. The US construction major Bechtel Co Ltd is the project management consultant for the project. L&T is actively involved in the execution of three substations including 230 km of 33 kV cabling for the same customer at Khalifa Port.
The other order, valued at Rs750 million, came from Dubai Electricity & Water Authority for the laying of 132 kV cables and performing associated works. It is to be completed in 11 months.
Big Qatar order
In yet another development, the company recently announced it secured a $272 million order from Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramma) for the supply and construction of sub-stations.
Earlier it said it had won a 'breakthrough' order valued at Rs1.85 billion from Kahramaa for the engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 66 km of 220 kV underground cabling. This order, part of Kahramaa’s Phase X, was the first 220 kV cable order for L&T in Qatar. The company said it bagged the contract against stiff competition from international cable OEMs.
L&T (Oman) LLC, a joint venture of L&T in Muscat, Oman, has secured a Rs 870 million order from Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) for the construction of 3 MV substations including the associated 33 kV cabling works, to be completed in nine months.
