APC by Schneider Electric, a global leader in integrated critical power and cooling services, recently installed two tier 3+ data centres for Smartworld within Dubai World Central (DWC).
The implementation is considered strategic as the centres have to support all mission-critical applications and IT infrastructure for all clients of Smartworld.
Smartworld, an ICT services provider, works closely with government agencies and telecommunications operators to increase operational efficiencies and drive business value. It provides knowledge and experience in the domain of airport systems integration and aviation infrastructure services management and presents end-to-end solutions for airport business needs.
DWC, a 140 sq km urban aviation community located around the world’s largest airport – Al Maktoum International Airport – is one of the most strategically important commercial infrastruc- ture developments in the Middle East, designed to support Dubai’s aviation, tourism, commercial and logistics requirements until 2050.
Mustafa Kaddoura, Smartworld’s chief technology officer, said: “APC fully integrates power, cooling, rack management and security services and has provided considerable benefits to Smartworld. InfraStruXure’s on-demand architecture allows us to deliver a better level of service to our customers.”

Kaddoura: considerable benefits |
“The total solution helps me meet my challenges of day-to-day functionality as well as building a thriving data centre facility that will function effectively well into the future, all while maintaining a cost-effective budget and timeline,” commented Kaddoura.
The installation of the two identical data centres of 100 sq m each started in June 2008. Complete with APC’s InfraStruXure architecture, the data centres represent the industry’s most comprehensive and integrated power, cooling and management solution. Each datacentre consists of 30 racks, using Symmetra PX2 UPS (two units, each 160 KW), nine units of InRow DX Cooling, nine indoor units and nine outdoor units and 30 Netshelter Networking/Server racks.
The APC power distribution system using the newly launched half-rack PDU system, over head power/data cabling and NetBotz environmental monitoring system were also installed.
Additional solutions
Additional solutions included multiple zones with different densities, for example installations of high-density racks up to 12 KW with rack air containment systems (RACS) and the installation of APC’s InfraStruXure Central, a monitoring system which collects, organises and distributes critical alerts, surveillance video and key information from anywhere on the network.

Callaghan: providing solutions, |
Scalable power and cooling results in better PUE (power usage effectiveness) and virtualisation is fully leveraged when power and cooling are right-sized to the post-virtualisation load. In addition, predictable row-based, close-coupled cooling deployments further increase data centre efficiency.”
Rodney Callaghan, vice president, APC by Schneider Electric, Gulf, commented: “Rising power densities, unprecedented cooling issues, increased energy demands and soaring prices mean power and cooling are now customers’ central focus. The clear path to capturing these new revenue streams lies in providing solutions, not just products.”
Callaghan said APC’s solutions were coupled with sound return on investment (ROI) business models, which was a key factor for Smartworld in order to protect investment.
“We help customers to make the right decision and offer solutions to support virtualisation strategies. Scalable infrastructure minimises waste, minimises the inefficiency of over sizing during consolidation and re-growth prepares you for higher densities to come.”
