Alawi: safety is the key element in a project

Specialised safety management company Osho Centre is currently working on one of Bahrain’s most prestigious projects, the Villamar development, that will house residential apartments and commercial establishments, the company revealed.

Osho is implementing a full-scale safety management system for 1,500 construction workers on the project that incorporates three towers of 50, 48 and 45 floors, it said.
“Safety management is considered the key element in any project, allowing the contractor, client and investors to communicate together, improve and implement practical techniques and provide measures of control,” said Osho Centre development manager Mohamed Alawi.
“Moreover it also takes into consideration individual planning at each stage of work and creates a safe environment, facilitating practical planning procedures leading to safety, efficiency, cost control and environmental protection.”
Discussing the Villamar project, Alawi said: “We’re currently working alongside clients and the contractor to ensure that the installation of passenger and goods hoists is conducted in accordance with our safety procedures. This relates to delivery of the hoists to site, conformity of the equipment, erection, testing and certification as well as training for hoist operators.
“One of the main challenges is entwining safety with daily operations among technical staff during construction. We have to make sure that the proper procedures are implemented effectively and efficiently.”
While the work is in various stages of progress, Gulf Holding Company which is developing Villamar, thanked Osho Centre for its “continuous efforts and contribution towards safety at Villamar.”  “Your safety manager John, your scaffolding manager Hussam and their teams contributed to safety and prevented many possible deadly accidents since they started working at our project. Please keep on doing the good work and accept our full support,” it said.
Osho has also been contracted to provide safety management to two other major multi-storey developments – Marina West and Pearl Towers – and has completed similar work for Marriott Executive Suites in Juffair, Pearl Towers and Bahrain Financial Harbour.
The company provides health, safety and environment (HSE) consultancy and management services and has lent its expertise to construction and industrial projects including those in the oil and gas and petrochemicals sectors in Bahrain and other Gulf states.
The company was contracted to provide HSE consultancy to Bapco (Bahrain Petroleum Company). The work included risk assessment for Bapco’s refinery activities.
Osho also conducted ergonomic and industrial hygiene studies for General Petrochemical Industries Co.
It is currently working on a safety implementation procedure for the American Mission Hospital. The hospital does not have a full-time safety officer, so Osho is preparing a corrective action plan. “We’re doing twice a month audits to evaluate the hospital’s safety status and setting up a safety committee. We will review and update their emergency plan and provide safety awareness and training programmes for the staff,” said Alawi.  The audits will go on until further review.
A safety audit is also being conducting at the Bahrain campus of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. “The full-scale walkthrough safety audit is aimed at developing compliance with the regulations of the Ministry of Labour for places of health and education.
Osho is also engaged in developing an HSE programme for Gulf Business Machines’ offices in Bahrain and other Gulf states. This involves worksite analysis, reporting findings and observations, submitting a solutions proposal, developing an applicable safety programme, communicating and training, implementation of the programme and sustaining it.
Discussing the safety culture, Alawi stressed that prevention of accidents was a matter to be taken up at the stage before project planning and followed up by monitoring, auditing and reviewing work methods on a daily basis.
“Osho with its diverse experience has worked on many projects around the world and provided customised solutions that have resulted in great safety achievements. Many organisations have recorded millions of hours without lost time accidents or incidents.
“We’ve worked around the Gulf region and extended our reach all the way to Russia.
“We continue to promote a safety culture within organisations and enhance safety importance and awareness.”
