Power cables manufacturer Ducab has announced its first-half 2007 sales surged 55 per cent to Dh1.1 billion ($300 million) compared with the Dh711 million figure achieved for the same period last year.
Ducab managing director Walter Bailey said the performance was creditable considering that the company operated in a situation of increasing competition.
“The company actively participates in the economic and development activities in the UAE and the region while maintaining its vigilant approach and applying sensible management policies,” he said.
“The company’s robust business strategies have consistently generated solid growth and the financial results are a reflection of Ducab’s position as the region’s leading manufacturer of high-quality power cables in terms of sales, product diversity and quality of services offered. This achievement marks the beginning of a new era for Ducab. We have crossed the psychological one billion dirhams barrier and are now eager to embrace new challenges,” Bailey added.
Ducab was established in 1979 as the first purpose-built cable manufacturing company in the UAE and is equally owned by the Government of Dubai and Government of Abu Dhabi. Its product range comprises high voltage cables of up to 132 kV; Ducab Powerplus medium voltage cables up to 33 kV; low voltage power cables; control and auxiliary cables; wiring and lead-sheathed cables; and Ducab Smokemaster, low smoke and fume zero halogen cables. Ducab is also well known as the distributor of Ducab Connect cable accessories.
Ducab has undertaken many developments in the last 10 years including the manufacture of medium voltage cables in 1998. Its Abu Dhabi factory was opened early in 2005, its PVC compounding facility in Jebel Ali was opened during 2006 and its copper rod casting plant is currently under construction in Musaffah.
The company announced earlier this year it would invest Dh66 million ($17.9 million) to increase capacity by 50 per cent.
The expansion will focus on the manufacture of power cables, building wires and cables of specialist designs at both the Dubai and Abu Dhabi factory sites.
The new capacity will enable the company to meet and support the needs of its growing customer base both in the region and beyond. The new cable types will particularly suit the needs of the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors and other major industrial developments.
Ducab made a strong entry into the Saudi market by securing in September 2006 its largest single order. The company signed a Dh100 million contract with Saudi Electric Company (SEC) for the supply of medium and low voltage cables.
