The UAE emirate of Ras Al Khaimah said it agreed with the government of Andhra Pradesh to develop an alumina refinery and a 250,000 tonnes per year aluminium smelter in the Indian state.

The refinery will have a capacity to produce 1 million tonnes a year of alumina from the Indian state’s 550 million tonnes of the raw material, bauxite, the government of Ras Al Khaimah said in a statement.
Construction of the plants will start in August and be completed in or before 2010, Khater Massaad, chief executive of the state-controlled Ras al-Khaimah Investment Authority, was quoted as saying in the statement.
Capacity of the smelter could be doubled to 500,000 tonnes.
