Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz has announced several industrial and infrastructure projects worth more than SR81 billion  ($21.6 billion) at the Second Jubail Industrial City (Jubail 2).

A number of the projects belong to the Royal Commission of Jubail and Yanbu and to Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) as well as private companies.
The King also launched new facilities at King Fahd Industrial Port and infrastructure projects for Jubail 2 and inaugurated projects completed under Phase One of Jubail 2, including a seawater intake structure and pumping facility capable of delivering 200,00 cu m per hour of seawater, a 33 km road network and 30 km of pipelines for fuel gas and feedstock as well as paths, bridges, drainage, waste water systems, and a water distribution system. The King opened the expansion at the King Fahd Industrial Port, which included additional petrochemical terminals and tank farms.
The construction of the infrastructure at Jubail 2 runs parallel with projects such as new housing projects in the industrial cities, expansion of the King Fahd Industrial Port and Jubail Commercial Port, the expansion of the railroad to Jubail, and the development of Ras Al Zour as a new industrial hub.
King Abdullah commissioned the 75,000-tonne butanediol petrochemical complex, which belongs to the Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem).
The plant, the first of its kind in the Middle East, has an annual capacity of 75,000 tonnes to meet world and domestic market demands. Jubail Industrial City now accounts for seven per cent of the world’s total petrochemical production and 70 per cent of the kingdom’s non-oil exports and contributes more than 11 per cent of the kingdom’s total non-oil gross domestic product, and helps sustain its annual growth at six per cent.
In terms of the Saudi Arabia’s total foreign investment, 50 per cent has gone into Jubail Industrial City.
Infrastructure at Jubail will be further boosted with the upgraded production of 800,000 cu m per day of desalinated water and 2,700 MW of electricity by the year 2009.
King Abdullah opened Jubail 2 in December, 2004 when he was Crown Prince. Jubail 2 is expected to attract investment projects worth SR220 billion and create some 55,000 job opportunities. It will provide an expansion facility for the industrialisation of the city for the next 25 years. Jubail is a burgeoning industrial hub on the Arabian Gulf.
The city has enjoyed massive foreign investments of over SR172 billion. Nearly half of the industrial investments flowing into the kingdom go to Jubail.
