Premier Logistics Muscat LLC (PLM) is an established logistics operator in Oman and has a large clientele especially amongst international energy companies.
PLM is currently investing in new equipment and technology and expanding its network in the Gulf region with operations in Dubai and planned openings in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the company announced.
The new initiatives will further PLM’s delivery coverage, which now spreads from Yemen to Jordan, said deputy general manager Chris Fidler. The company, part of Premier Logistics Group, is also developing its equipment hire business and looking to invest in warehousing in the rapidly growing industrial area of Sohar in Northern Oman. The company has a thriving customs and forwarding operation based in Muscat and intends to set up a similar service at the new Sohar port facility.
PLM’s particular specialisation is moving heavyweight and oversize loads and supplying cranes and heavy forklifts. It supports the energy sector with rig and camp moving services, rental of equipment and bulk transport of pipeline components, water, fuel and crude oil. The activities are supported by in-house customs clearance and freight forwarding expertise.
Examples of important contracts won in recent years include DynCorp for line-haulage in Oman, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan. The company was also contracted by Dalma Energy for rig moving and rental of specialist equipment and by Occidental for the bulk haulage of crude oil. Other significant contracts include Veritas and High Arctic for rig and camp moving
Premier has a number of industrial customers in Sohar and is currently bidding for transport and logistics contracts with several of the major new sites around the Sohar Industrial Port area.
PLM, founded 28 years ago, runs a fleet of recent MAN and Mercedes tractor units, some of 4x2 configuration but mainly 6x4, with a normal load capacity of 30 tonnes but lads above 50 tonnes can be routinely transported. There is a large range of trailer types including a variety of tankers, flatbed trailers; lowboys and heavy/oversize lift equipment. In addition to smaller commercial vehicles there is a wide choice of cranes, wheel loaders and skid tanks. The company also operates specialist rig moving equipment and boasts a fleet of Kenworth, Western Star and Peterbilt oilfield and winch trucks.
To cater to its growing business, the company is investing in new cranes, additional trailers, specialist heavy lift trailers, tractor units and forklifts.
“Investment in technology is important to us and our customers,” says Fidler. “Our vehicles are currently tracked by satellite and we expect to add an IVMS (In Vehicle Management System) in the near future. The business is always looking to diversify and is looking to expand operations and the customer base in Sohar.”
Being predominantly an Oman-based company, PLM wants to attract business that has an Omani connection. “A good example of this is our contract with DynCorp that makes use of our Omani workforce to make deliveries throughout the GCC region,” says Fidler.
As an Omani-owned company, Premier has made special efforts to expand and develop its local workforce and today Omanis represent over 65 per cent of the total staff. “Much effort has gone into staff selection and training and this is an ongoing commitment. All staff are trained to high standards, particularly in health, safety and environmental matters, and the company has recently become the proud possessor of the ISO 9000 certification,” says Fidler.
