Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd is to expand the oil terminal it operates in the emirate by 360,000 cbm of new tankage and two new berths.
Following this expansion the terminal will have a total capacity of 1.5 million cbm, six berths, and a single-point mooring system capable of handling vessels up to 175,000 dwt.
“This expansion in berths and tankage will enable Vopak Horizon Fujairah to further improve its hub-function in the Middle East for black and clean mineral-oil products,” the company said.
Vopak Horizon Fujairah is a joint venture between the Enoc Group, Koninklijke Vopak NV (Royal Vopak, the Netherlands), the Government of Fujairah, Kuwait’s Independent Petroleum Group and the Vitol Group.
The facility that Vopak Horizon Fujairah operates is the first independent onshore oil terminal outside the Arabian Gulf. Fujairah is the world’s second-largest bunkering center. The terminal is designed to handle products including naphtha, gasoline, gas oil, jet fuel, kerosene, condensate, methanol, methyl tertiary butyl ether, fuel oil, and crude oil.
It can accept tankers of up to 175,000 dwt. The company complies with the most stringent safety and environmental standards.
The expansion will entail eight new tanks with a total capacity of 360,000 cbm, the capacity of tanks ranging from 30,000 to 60,000 cbm. There will be one new berth for vessels up to 110,000 dwt, one new berth for vessels up to 60,000 dwt, two loading arms of 12 inches for white products and two loading arms of 16 inches for black products. The expansion is planned to become operational in Q3 2007.
Hussain M Sultan, group executive and board member of the Enoc Group, said: “The economy of the UAE is growing at a tremendous rate and many investments are being made in facilities such as refineries. Fujairah’s location, just outside the Gulf, is ideal. This new expansion of Vopak Horizon Fujairah is the fifth phase.
“We have grown ever since we began operations in 1998, and I expect our growth to continue; in fact, we are already planning the sixth phase of our expansion.”
Rob Nijst, division president Vopak Oil Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented: ”We are very pleased that we and our valued joint venture partners are able to further expand our services to our clients in the Middle East. Fujairah has grown into one of the world’s main bunker markets. Following this expansion Vopak Horizon Fujairah will be able to offer even more safe and reliable onshore storage facilities to our clients – not only for the fuel oil market, but also for clean products such as gasoline.”
