Berger Paints has several innovations to its name.
It was the first company in the Gulf to come out with a thermal insulation coating, Insuflex, which deflects heat and helps maintain a cooler temperature in the interiors. Insuflex has been used extensively by Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco). The product has been independently tested and certified by Geosciences Laboratory, based in the US.
“Berger Paints has a large product range, catering to the decorative, protective & industrial and wood finish segments,” says Anand Ramadurai, Berger Paints’ Bahrain-based regional manager for the Gulf. The offerings include a range of emulsion paints and enamel paints, as well as specialty interior and exterior products specially developed for the region.
“Berger is the market leader in Bahrain. It has the largest retail network in the country and also offers thousands of colours to consumers through 11 ‘Colourworld’ shops,” says Ramadurai. “Being the best means making sure the quality standards need to be kept up as well which is why Berger Paints maintains very stringent quality standards and has ISO 9001:2000 certifications.”
Berger Paints Bahrain and Berger Paints Emirates are subsidiaries of Berger International Limited (BIL), a listed company in the Singapore Stock Exchange. BIL, in turn has merged with Asian Paints Limited. The group is currently the 10th largest decorative paint company in the world. BIL has subsidiaries in 10 countries, spread out across the Caribbean, the Middle East and Far East. Asian Paints has operations in South Asia, Middle East, and South Pacific. Besides, Scib Paints in Egypt and Taubmans in Fiji are also part of the same group.
Berger Paints, already a well-established name in several export markets, still seeks to expand its market presence. In the UAE it is an upcoming player and exports to the Middle Eastern states of Syria, Lebanon, Qatar and Saudi Arabia as well as to the Commonwealth of Independent States. Exports form an important part of the overall strategy, and efforts focus on designing and providing products to suit specific market requirements.
Asian Paints in Oman is the market leader in wood finishes, a feat achieved in a very short span of five years. The wood finish products, marketed under the Touchwood brand, are now being used across Oman, including in projects of the Diwan of the Royal Court. Asian Paints is a member of the UK-based Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA), and some key products have been approved by FIRA.
Berger Paints has bagged several prestigious projects in the Gulf. Some of these are the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, Deira City Centre, Dubai Media City and Hilton Hotel. In Bahrain, Berger has painted famous landmarks including the Manama-Muharraq Causeway, The Bahrain Mall, Bahrain Exhibition Centre, the Bahrain University, the Novotel Al Dana Resort Hotel and constructions in the US Navy Base.
“Demand has been steadily increasing and Berger Paints has been gearing up to provide for that,” explains Ramadurai.
Berger Paints has developed several specialty products for exteriors some of which are Tartaruga, Stone Shield, Vintage, and Luxatile. Each of these provide unique finishes and are very longlasting. The company has full-fledged laboratories in both Bahrain and Dubai that are manned by technologists with a vast experience. Asian Paints has a laboratory in Oman and the Regional Technology Centre for the Gulf is in Dubai.
Worldwide, Berger Paints licenses its brand and technology in a few countries. It has a licensing arrangement in Indonesia, and a technology arrangement in Pakistan. Asian Paints has a tie-up in India with PPG, the largest automotive manufacturer in the world.
“Rising input costs remain a challenge since selling prices cannot be continuously moved upwards,” says Ramadurai. Yet he expects the paint industry to see healthy growth in the Gulf over the next five years. “The involvement of consumers in the paint purchase process is likely to increase in the coming years, although this market will not see much of DIY since low-cost labour will continue to exist,” observes Ramadurai.
“Berger Paints is confident about its performance in the coming years.”
