The Asry yard: healthy forward order book

Arabian Ship Repair Yard (Asry) reported it worked on 49 ships in the first quarter of this year with sales increasing by 10 per cent over the same period in 2003.

The total number of vessels repaired in 2003 was 120 and revenues earned were $87.1 million, of which $35 million came from the Arab market.
“What has been encouraging is the resurgence in the international markets with many owners continuing to return to the yard on a regular basis,” an Asry statement on the QI performance said.
It said international (non-Arab) sales were up 55 per cent with a total of 23 vessels repaired and the Arab markets were also well represented with a further 26. Nine owners had multiple dockings at the yard.
“Asry is now extremely busy with a very healthy forward book,” the statement said.
The company said there also had been during Q1 a marked interest in Asry’s rig repair capabilities following its alliance with Rig Design Services in London. A number of rig owners had visited the yard and been extremely satisfied with the high quality of work recently completed on other rigs for Aramco and Arabian Drilling Company.
The demand for blasting and painting remained high throughout the first quarter with over 1.4 million sq m of painting and 364,000 sq m of blasting undertaken. Also completed were 12 major boiler repairs, drawing on the yard’s full range of facilities to complete the work on schedule. Steel repairs were also in demand with more than 1,400 tonnes of steel being used.
Some of the vessels repaired during Q1 were Kuwait Oil Tanker’s Gas Al Burgan, 47,471 dwt, the Arabiyah, 121,109 dwt, and the Al Sabriyah, 1,109 dwt; Vela International’s Al Bali Star, 291,435 dwt, and Mirfak Star, 301,542 dwt; Dynacom Tankers’ Europe, 255,087 dwt, and Simba, 146,270 dwt; Springfield Shipping’s Olympic Legacy, 302,789 dwt, and Olympic Flair, 147396 dwt, and Pacific Marine Services’ MSC Emilia, 14,336 dwt, and MSC Valeria, 14,506 dwt.
