A Demag Masterline crane at the new Airbus A380 production facilities

For engineers and production staff, finding the “right” crane more easily, more quickly, more reliably and, therefore, more efficiently is what would matter most.

That is precisely what customers get when they decide in favour of the MasterLine range by Demag Cranes & Components, says Bernd Nordemann proudly. Nordemann is the general manager of the Dubai-based Demag Cranes and Components (Middle East)
MasterLine is a range of process-optimising cranes, which are designed to meet specific customer needs in various areas such as the paper industry, coil or steel handling, container handling or handling bulk materials. “Demag can supply them virtually ‘off-the-shelf’,” says Nordemann whose office is located at the Jebel Ali Free Zone.

“As the requirements for the various industries are specific to the given processes, there is no ‘crane for all seasons’. This is where the MasterLine concept comes in with its specialised Papermaster, Coilmaster, Steelmaster, Containermaster and Bulkmaster crane variants,” says Nordemann.

“With reference to all of these applications, Demag Cranes & Components has in-depth knowledge gained from decades of experience, which makes it possible to see the application from the customer’s point of view. Since the process expertise gained by Demag is integrated into these products, time and cost-intensive consultation can be used more efficiently to find the solution more quickly and reliably: the right production equipment.”
This, says the official, enables potential customers to concentrate on optimising the solution, including the selection of appropriate additional equipment and the choice of manual, semi- or fully automatic control.

“Demag supplies a crane that is neither over- or under-dimensioned, and which can always be developed using modular assemblies to meet the necessary standards. In this way, the customer is always provided with the most efficient solution for his needs,” he maintains.
To simplify selection further, Demag has developed various features packages for the MasterLine. Even Classic, the most cost-effective variant, already meets the basic requirements for a safe, reliable, tidy and professionally organised storage facility with a high level of space utilisation. The integral parts of this package are a crane, a load handling attachment such as a magnet, grab or C hook, and a radio remote control or an on-board cabin for the crane operator.

“If the requirements are more demanding, such as in terms of the handling rate or redundancy, or if the customer wants to prepare for fully automatic operation, then Advanced is the right choice,” suggest Nordemann.
The next stage, which also includes partial automation and the Storage Manager, including a warehouse management system, ensures even faster access to the goods as well as greater transparency in terms of stock levels and storage locations. The Premium stage features a fully automated operation programmed for optimum storage and retrieval schedules and sequences, as well as inventory management.

Demag provides versatile features packages to meet individual customer needs. In practice, this usually results in a blend of features tailored exactly to meet the requirements of the customer’s process. In addition, provision is also made for subsequent extensions and modifications, as far as they can be foreseen.

Demag designed the Steelmaster to be fitted with a weighing device, which can be easily added at a later date, for example. In principle, a Classic crane variant can be upgraded to the Premium design. Since this would probably be uneconomical, it is advisable, says Nordemann, to consider business developments in good time and to prepare for semi- or fully automatic operation from the very beginning, if required.
Nordemann spells out the major benefit of this concept: “Since standardised products are used for MasterLine cranes, including the feature package variants, all components can be manufactured in large quantities and, therefore, highly economically.”
