Manasek, in co-ordination with Emirates Transport (ET), has begun operating a bus service from Dubai to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Head of public relations at ET Khalid Fadl Ahmed said the service would cater to nationals and expatriates intending to spend the summer vacation in those countries and performing Umrah as well.

Passengers can stay overnight in Makkah to perform Umrah at no extra cost, he said. The bus to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon will leave Dubai every Thursday morning throughout the summer.

SecureEdoc will enter Gulf soon

The SecurEdoc electronic document service, a technology developed by TNT with US software company NetEx, is expected to be introduced in the Gulf soon, according to TNT's Gulf marketing and sales manager Steve Burd.

The service, operated through a dedicated web site www.tnt.com/securedoc, has been introduced by the Dutch-owned integrator in many parts of the world. The only requirement for accessing is that sender and receiver are connected to the Internet and have e-mail.

DHL bags customer service award

DHL Worldwide Express has won the Worldwide Multi-Media Award for outstanding customer service performance at the Teleperformance 2000 International Grand Prix.

The award is assessed by 55,000 telephone calls and 10,000 emails made by 'mystery callers' to evaluate the level of service provided by companies across 23 countries.

Basrec achieves ISO9002

The Bahrain Ship Repairing and Engineering Company (Basrec) has achieved ISO 9002 approval from Lloyds Register Quality Assurance to provide ship repairs for the next three years.

Basrec first gained the ISO 9002 certificate in 1997. Mubarak Jassim Kanoo, Basrec board chairman, received the ISO 9002 certification for the next period from Andy Easdown of Lloyds Register of Shipping during a ceremony at company premises.

Mida announces new rates

Members of the Middle East-Indian Subcontinent Discussion Agreement (Mida) have announced that a general rate increase of $150 per 20 ft container and $200 for 40 ft container and $300 per 20 ft or 40 ft reefer container will be applicable from September 1, 2000.

Mida members are American President Line, CMA-CGM. Cho Yang, P&O Nedlloyd, Maersk-Sealand, National Shipping Corporation of Saudi Arabia, Senator Lines and United Arab Shipping Company.
