Dubai-based manufacturers participating in trade shows, fairs and exhibitions abroad are now exempt from paying certificate of origin fees and related certification expenses, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) announced.

The exemption, which includes all trade shows, fairs and exhibitions which the chamber participates in or organises, follows the DCCI's plans to open up new markets for Dubai-based industries.

"The chamber decision will further sharpen the competitive edge of local businesses and help develop opportunities for growth abroad," said Ahmed Al Banna, its assistant director general for studies and international affairs, according to the Dubai press.

Dubai's export sector is worth Dh2.3 billion ($626 million), nearly 40 per cent of its GDP.

"The chamber is committed to bringing itself closer to members and opening doors to make business quicker, easier and more effective," said Al Banna.

The DCCI has organised a number of fairs and exhibitions abroad to promote the local industry.

Meanwhile, the Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority (Dafza) has received more than 800 applications from companies interested in setting up units in the zone, Dr Mohammed Al Zarouni, Director-General, Dafza, revealed.

But the official said the zone had a screening process that ensured only those companies that could make a significant contribution to the UAE economy in general and Dubai in particular would get a licence. Dr Zarouni observed that the interest shown by big corporations far exceeded targets and consequently Dafza had to go in for a major expansion drive.
