Bangladesh has found Canadian firm Niko Resources responsible for a devastating fire at the Tengratila gas field the northeast part of the country on January 7 this year.
“Niko is responsible for the blowout... for its gross negligence in designing the casing programme and inefficient operational supervision,” an inquiry committee wrote in a confidential report to the government.
The fire started in Sunamganj district, 400 km from Dhaka, where exploration tests were being conducted.
It blazed for two days, forcing hundreds of families to flee their homes and causing more than $15 million in damage to equipment, the committee said.
At least 1.5 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas was lost, the committee estimated.
The field had been developed by Niko Resources Ltd. and state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex), which holds a 30 per cent share of the joint venture.
The committee noted that there was no technical supervisor on the sight at the time of the explosion and there was no joint technical committee to look after the development plan on regular basis.
