UAE companies are among a large number of establishments worldwide that have confirmed their participation in Elec, an exhibition for operators in the electricity sector scheduled to take place in December in Paris.

Some 853 direct exhibitors, representing more than 2000 companies, had registered by July for the biennial show, which for the first time has a section totally dedicated to the lighting sector. Fifty per cent of the exhibitors are drawn from international companies and they include 268 newcomers, said organisers Elec Promotion whose partners comprise more than 40 unions, federations and associations.

The exhibition, which will also have conferences under four major heads, will be held from December 9 to 13 in halls 5 and 6 across a surface area of 100,000 sq m at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre. The UAE, Hungary, India and Japan are exhibiting for the first time and more than 100,000 visitors are expected to show up.

The expo, Elec's 22nd edition, is considered a unique meeting place for all operators in the electricity sector, be they manufacturers, distributors, contractors, specifiers or end users.

"Elec is a strategic meeting place for an entire industry. The objective of all the Elec 2002 participants is to improve on comfort, provide industry with greater intelligence and strengthen communications," the organisers said. Areas of interest include automation, HVAC and lighting, taking into account the needs of such sectors as energy, industry, service and residential buildings and infrastructure.

Attractions associated with the lighting sector, which is receiving special attention this time, include the Light Premiere trophy, a European contest launched in June. A Light Premier International Conference is being organised with four major topics: "East and West"; Nocturnal Plurals; "New Technologies, quality of life and sustainable development"; and "Light, communication and architecture."

The main conferences will be held under the broad heads of industrial control and regulation, project management in the building sector, climatic engineering and local authorities.

Under "Project management in the building sector" a series of 15 conferences will be held on the following topics: "Lighting (new constructions, restoration/renovation, aesthetics and comfort)"; "Safety of installations"; "Air conditioning"; and "High environmental quality".

The other conferences are on "The energetic efficiency of refrigerating installations" (under climatic engineering) and "Green and Glass (local authorities)." The latter will discuss light and urban development, public lighting and safety, enhancing national heritage and promotion of towns. The Internet site for the event is www.elec.fr
