UAE airline Emirates has installed a $1 million RFFT (Real Fire Fighting Trainer), the first of its kind in the region, for staff training.

The device, one of just four worldwide, was constructed and installed by Interfire of Finland over a two-and-a-half-year period. It has been installed in a new, purpose-built facility within the grounds of the Emirates Aviation College.

"The device uses the latest technology in heat and flame detection, enabling us to further refine our fire-fighting training course in an environmentally and operationally very safe way," said Emirates general manager for flight training facilities Terence Forman.

Following the aviation regulatory authorities' requirement to complete real fire fighting training annually with a beginning before the end of this year, Emirates' aircrew are now using the RFFT to update their skills in fighting different types of fires.

The device will also supplement the current Safety Emergency Procedure (SEP) training requirement for new cabin crewmembers. Emirates' Group Safety Department will also use the RFFT for the airline's office and ground staff who are volunteer fire wardens in the company's various office and accommodation buildings.
