New antifouling coatings launched

International Paint, part of Akzo Nobel, has introduced to world markets its Intersmooth 7465Si SPC and Interswift 6900Si silyl acrylate antifouling coatings.

“Aiming to improve and enhance customer choice,  International is the  first and  only global  manufacturer to offer both copper acrylate and silyl acrylate antifouling coatings within a comprehensive range of fouling control technologies,” it said in a statement.

“In 2006, International Paint successfully patented silyl acrylate technology for use with products of less than 400g/l VOCs (volatile organic compounds). This technology is incorporated into Intersmooth 7465Si SPC and Interswift 6900Si and allows delivery of the same high levels of  proven in-service  performance as our current Intersmooth 7460/5HS SPC  and Interswift 6800HS  copper acrylate antifouling  coatings,” it added.

Both new silyl products have solvent emission levels of less than 400g/l VOC. This means that they are some of the lowest silyl acrylate solvent emission levels in the industry.

Designed for deep sea vessels at newbuilding and   maintenance and repair,   Intermonth 7465Si SPC features 55 per cent volume solids. Compared to lower volume solids products, this results in shipyard benefits of faster application, reduced wastage and pail consumption and lower solvent emissions to the atmosphere.

Reduced overspray leads to lower contamination levels in docks and reduced applicator exposure.  For the vessel operator, the product delivers predictable, high performance fouling control for up to 90 months (which applies to vessels covered by the extended drydocking programme) and its inherent self-smoothing action potentially reduces fuel use by 4 per cent, (when comparing the performance of self-polishing copolymer antifoulings with CDP or rosin-based antifoulings over a 60-month in-service period).  The reduction in fuel use cuts   operational costs, lowers carbon dioxide emissions and improves vessel operating image.

Patented technology

Interswift 6900Si incorporates patented silyl acrylate   polymer technology. Also designed for vessels at newbuilding and maintenance and repair, the product offers 61 per cent volume solids, surface tolerance and in-service periods of up to 60 months with potential fuel savings of 1.5 per cent.

Mike Hindmarsh, International Paint business  development manager said, “ We recognise that  our customers   have different requirements and operational preferences, which is why we offer a broad choice of  fouling control products and  technologies in our high performance  range. Customers simply choose which technology option best meets their needs and we deliver the performance.”

In other developments, International Paint announced that its principal anticorrosive primers and shop primers have successfully passed the very demanding IMO PSPC COT (the International Maritime Organisation’s Performance Standard for Protective Coatings of Cargo Oil Tanks) laboratory tests in accordance with the IMO MSC.288 (87) Solas regulations for cargo oil tankers.

These regulations, approved at MSC87 in May 2010, become effective for new cargo oil tankers from the 1st of January 2013 under the IMO PSPC COT.  Similar to the requirements of the IMO PSPC for sea water ballast tanks, these regulations are designed to ensure the longevity of cargo oil tanks and stipulate that applied coatings must remain in ‘good’ condition for a minimum of 15   years, as defined by the International Association of  Classification Societies.

For a cargo oil tank coating to comply, all coatings must be tested by Class Society approved testing facilities and have a Class Society Type Approval Certificate (TAC). The award of a TAC means the product has demonstrated the   expected in service performance, the quality of the supplied material is assured and the product supply location has met regulatory requirements.

The successful IP products passing laboratory tests include key products from the Interbond, Intergard, Interplate and Intershield product ranges.
