Italian steel company Danieli, which signed a contract with Qatar Steel Company (Qasco) for the construction of a smelter, has been associated with a number of projects in the Middle East.
It announced in late May it would supply an 850,000 tonnes per year (tpy) plant at Al Rajhi Steel, Saudi Arabia, on a complete turnkey basis.
The original order, awarded early last year, included a steelmaking plant basically composed of a 100-t Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), ladle furnace, 5/6-strand billet caster, materials handling system and ancillary parts.
According to the recent agreement, in addition to some technological equipment, Danieli will supply all other auxiliary plants and equipment on a turnkey basis. This includes an MV/LV distribution system, auxiliary systems (such as a fume treatment plant, LPG storage, HVAC, fire fighting, maintenance workshop, DRI dedusting plant, etc), all piping, cabling and structures.
Erection and supervision of all equipment will also be under Danieli responsibility.
The state-of-the-art steelmaking plant will be installed in Jeddah Industrial area and will feed Al Rajhi Steel’s hot rolling mill division to produce 750,000 tpy of commercial long products.
In Turkey, a 70-t Danarc EAF is successfully operating at Asil Çelik’s steelmaking plant since the beginning of April 2005, Danieli announced in May.
The 5.3-m-shell EAF is served by a 50 MVA +20 per cent transformer and equipped with burners and oxygen lance.
Asil Çelik is a major producer of high-quality alloyed and non-alloyed hot rolled long products for the automotive and machine manufacturing industry
Also in Turkey a contract was signed on April 20 in Kocaeli. Tezcan is a leading company holding about 40 per cent of the domestic market of galvanised strip and the plant is part of a wider project envisaging the short-term purchase of a new galvanising and coating line.
The temper mill has a maximum capacity of 300,000 tpy and the maximum speed is 600 mpm.
The plant layout is typical Danieli: a 4-hi stand for 1,000 t of flattening power in wet system mode, with winding reel and entry bridle, tension reel and exit dividing shear. Material handling is entrusted to two car-moving systems with an upstream coil tilter: they both give sufficient coils accumulation upon preparation, entry, storage and exit.
Danieli Automation will supply electricals, automation and process control systems
A vacuum degassing station installed at Hadeed II Flat Products facility meltshop at Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, is designed for treating approximately 500,000 tpy out of the steel plant’s total liquid steel production, including 450,000 tpy of API grades and 50,000 tpy of Extra Deep Drawing Quality (EDDQ) grades (down to 0.004 per cent of carbon contents).
First 150-t heats were successfully processed in mid-December 2004. The twin-tank VD station, supplied on a complete turnkey basis and arranged for future VOD processing of stainless steels, is complete with all auxiliaries, including gas-fired steam generator, ferroalloys and an additives automatic charging and handling system serving also the existing ladle furnace, water treatment plant and a Level 2 automation and process control system.
Last October, Içdas Çelik’s wire rod line No 2 facility in Turkey successfully delivered its first hot-rolled coils.
Line No 2 is installed parallel to the wire rod line No 1 (also supplied by Danieli and started up in November 2001) and has exactly the same characteristics.
The two lines are fed by a new 700,000-tpy independent two-strand continuous mill and designed for producing 5.5 to 16-mm-dia wire rods in coils weighing up to 3000 kg, at finishing speeds of up to 115 mps, for various steel grades including automotive and similar demanding applications.
The new line is made up of a 10-pass high-speed block, a HSS-high speed cropping shear before laying head, a controlled cooling line with RRT rotating coil forming pit and a vertical trestle coil finishing line with Sund coil compactor.
Danieli Automation supplied the electricals and automation and process control systems.
