Reynaers Aluminium has announced the completion of large refurbishment projects in London and Birmingham.

Designed by architects Studio Downie, the new facilities of the Royal Geographical Society in London include a visitor pavilion, a public exhibition space, educational facilities, a reading room and archives.
“Reynaers CW 50 curtain walling system and CS 38 slim line window system allowed the creation of an open and transparent building that respects the historic heritage,” a press release said.
CS 38 also offered the ideal solution for the Wexler Lofts refurbishment project in Birmingham, it said. “Specified by BPN Architects the slender window system offers elegance and strength, as well as giving improved thermal performance over the steel originals.”
The major challenge of the brief was to respect the sensitive heritage of the existing historic building whilst allowing the Society to maximise on value-added usable areas.
This had to be achieved within a landlocked garden and a building that was already restricted with regards to space.
Reynaers CW 50 curtain walling system allowed an open and transparent glass and concrete exhibition pavilion to welcome visitors to the Society’s archives through a new entrance. The façade allows views to the building’s gardens as well as giving an impressive view through to the landmark Royal Albert Hall.
Going through the pavilion and down the new spiral staircase, the library, reading room and archives are to be found. This forms a sunken building in which eye level views of the garden have been created also using Reynaers CW 50 system. This flexible curtain walling system provides the architect with creative freedom through allowing the integration of numerous types of vents. Throughout this project the CS 38 vent has been used in order to keep the width of the sight lines to a minimum, maximising on the natural light entering the space.
