Sabic, for whom MyCelx is building an oily water treatment plant

Siemens Water Technologies and MyCelx Technologies Corporation (Gainesville, Georgia, USA) have reached an exclusive distributorship and service agreement to promote oil removal technology in Saudi Arabia. Siemens will use its sales and service organisation in Saudi Arabia to distribute and support the MyCelx product line, which includes proprietary advanced coalescer and oil removal technology, as well as proprietary filtration media.

MyCelx technologies complement Siemens’ water treatment technologies, acting as a polisher for API and CPI separators, hydrocyclones, flotation cells, and multi-media filters, or as pre-treatment for Siemens’ broad array of membrane separation technologies. MyCelx advanced coalescer and oil removal technologies are effective at removing free, dispersed and emulsified, and soluble oil droplets down to 0.09 microns. The proprietary technology makes it possible to achieve stringent offshore discharge limits as well as treat oily wastewater by making it suitable for feed to a reverse osmosis system.

MyCelx technology and filter media captures and removes hydrocarbons from air and water in as little as a single pass, and delivers efficiency in a very small footprint – usually 1/10th the footprint of competing polishing technologies. MyCelx filtration media are highly sustainable because they only activate in the presence of oil. The filters are not consumed in the absence of pollution and retain their filtration ability without waterlogging. The filters also produce very little differential pressure to saturation, reducing energy consumption and the carbon footprint of environments in which they are used.

In Saudi Arabia, usable water is a scarce and expensive commodity. The MyCelx technology makes it possible to economically recycle large volumes of water used in the petrochemical and oil and gas industries. Siemens Water Technologies is active in Saudi Arabia, providing operating and maintenance services to industrial customers nationwide.

The local Siemens service business, headquartered in Al-Khobar, will maintain an inventory of MyCelx equipment and consumables, available for immediate delivery to Saudi customers. Local support will be provided by Siemens Water Technologies technicians for installation and maintenance of MyCelx systems. Siemens will use its sales and service organisation in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia, to distribute and support the MyCelx technology.

Impressive achievements
MyCelx is a trademark of MyCelx Technologies Corporation. The company has chalked up impressive achievements in recent months.

It announced in March it was granted a   contract to provide a key, state-of-the-art oily water treatment plant for Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic). MyCelx was awarded the contract after successful pilot evaluations and performance verification and its system was acclaimed as having the least environmental footprint. The MyCelx Custom Designed Process will produce recyclable waste by-product with less or no waste disposal.

In February the company announced its MyCelx Storm systems were chosen by Constitution Square site (Washington DC) developers to treat 250 gpm and 1,000 gpm of storm water discharge to meet state and federal requirements. Constitution Square consists of over 1.6 million sq ft of mixed use property, including government offices, residential apartments, hotel, grocery and retail stores, and garage parking.

Around the same time, MyCelx oil removal technology was chosen as a key component for reduction of water consumption and meeting discharge requirements under GE’s Ecomagination initiative. As a result, GE Glass projects to reduce water use by over 60 million gallons per year, which translates into cost savings and short-term ROI. According to Paul Greco, Sr VP of sales for MyCelx, the company’s innovative technology advances GE’s commitment to invest in creative solutions to environmental challenges.

Last year, Det Norske Veritas issued MyCelx Technologies Corporation the ISO 9001:2000 certification for the manufacture of filtration products to separate oil from water and air.  The certification of compliance recognises the established practices and policies at MyCelx to be consistent with the ISO 9001:2000 standards.
