The GPIC plant

Bahrain’s Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) made a record profit of $180 million in 2007.

The company produces ammonia, urea and methanol.
GPIC general manager Abdul Rahaman Jawahery announced the profits while speaking at the conclusion of the GPIC Health and Safety Week celebrations at the company’s complex in Sitra.
The event was held under the patronage of the Advisor to the Prime Minister for Industry and Oil Affairs and GPIC chairman Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa.
“We are extremely proud of our safety achievements,” Jawahery said and added that the excellent safety record had contributed to the profits.
“The records have been recognised internationally and we have received several awards as well. This is all due to the employees’ dedication.”
He said the year gone by was full of challenges for the company and there were also a lot of achievements.
“The year witnessed the biggest periodical maintenance in the GPIC’s history in terms of the work carried out, the budget and the manpower involved.”
GPIC’s production in 2007 was estimated at 1.37 million tonnes against 1.48 million tonnes in 2006.
In 2007, production of ammonia was 416,581 tonnes against 450,619 tonnes in 2006, urea production was 583,987 tonnes against 624,682 tones and methanol production 370,438 tonnes against 406,595 tonnes.
Work is in progress to increase production of methanol and urea. A carbon dioxide recovery (CDR) project the company has launched will use flue gas from the methanol reformer to augment production of the two substances. The project will be completed by 2010.
