The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP), through the Oman Tender Board has approved the award of two contracts for the sultanate’s next independent water and power project (IWPP).
The legal consultancy contract was awarded to the UK’s Berwin Leighton Paisner. Switzerland’s Electrowatt Engineering Services (EES) won the technical advisory contract.
The potential capacity of the plant is 700 MW of power and 26 million gallons per day of desalinated water.
The location of the plant has not been confirmed. One possible location is Barka, on the Batinah coast, which is already the site of the Barka IWPP. A second plant, Barka 2, is under construction.
The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company was incorporated in 2002. The PWP is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Electricity Holding Company that in turn is 100 per cent owned by the Government of Oman.
Its mission is to ensure that there is electricity and related water available at the lowest cost to meet the growing demands in Oman and to provide employment opport-unities for Omanis.
