A Dubai police civil defence team

Visitors to Intersec 2007 witnessed a live demonstration of emerency rescue and fire fighting skills presented by the UAE Ministry of Interior’s Dubai Department of Civil Defence on the first day of the event at Dubai’s International Exhibition and Convention Centre.”

Intersec, whose 2007 edition was held from January 21 to 23, is the Middle East’s largest commercial security, police and homeland security, fire and safety and health event.
Organisers of the exhibition said the demonstrations largely focused on the use of helicopters as a primary resource in fire fighting, casualty evacuation and rescue.
Chris Hudson, director of exhibitions of Intersec’s organising company Messe Frankfurt, said the department was one of the most longstanding and keen supporters of the show.
“Most residents and drivers in the UAE witness the challenges presented to the emergency services on a daily basis. With alarming numbers of road traffic accidents and the public’s apathy towards simple fire prevention and safety procedures, both civil defence and the police authorities have their work cut out,” said Hudson.
The demonstrations were staged in the car park area in front of the exhibition venue allowing some of the expected 16,000 visitors the chance to see the high standards of professionalism achieved in the UAE.  The first demonstration created a simulation of a fire in a multi-storey building, rescuing people by helicopter from a raised platform.
The department’s second demonstration staged in conjunction with the Dubai police was designed to show how rescues could be made from serious road traffic accidents featuring a bus. Chris Hudson said, “this seems an all too familiar scenario these days with the recent tragic incidents in Dubai, but the public needs to be made aware of the excellent job the local authorities do in dealing with very difficult circumstances.”
