Saudi Formaldehyde Chemical Company Limited (SFCCL) has awarded India’s largest engineering and construction company, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), along with its consortium partner, Denmark’s Haldor Topsoe AS, a SR412 million ($109.8 million) contract for setting up  high-tech methanol and carbon monoxide plants in Saudi Arabia.

L&T will carry out engineering works and procure equipment and materials for the plant under the contract on an E&P (Engineering and Procurement) basis.
The SFCCL, which makes formaldehyde and its derivatives, is undertaking backward integration by installing plants of 700 tonnes per day (tpd) of methanol and 100 tpd of carbon monoxide.  Its products include formalin, UF-85, hesamine, melfores, paraformaldehyde, ufores 201P and ufores 301P conforming to the strictest international standards.
The Jubail-based SFCCL, established in 1989, is a private sector enterprise, developed, promoted and financed by a group of leading industrialists from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. It is a grass-root, second-generation petrochemical complex.
L&T and Haldor Topsoe have a long association, having worked on many domestic and international hydrogen, ammonia and reformer projects. The company will manufacture some critical equipment at its Powai and Hazira works and, along with its consortium partner, provide technical services for setting up and commissioning the plant.
