Qatar Plastic Products Company (QPPC) has reported sales of QR60 million ($16.4 million) in 2003, up 39 per cent over the previous year.

The amount was realised from selling more than 10,000 tonnes of products including form, fill and seal (FFS) and shrink films, top open bags, blue sleeving, general-purpose and construction foils, greenhouse and agricultural films and heavy duty trash bags
Some 90 per cent of the production is sold in the Qatari market with the remainder going to other Gulf countries and Europe.
“QPPC ensures the delivery of quality products and services. This dedication to quality helped the company win a substantial product export order to a European market in 2003,” said general manager Hassan Al Rashid.
“QPPC is now focusing its attention on Middle East markets and has formulated plans to enhance the exposure and sale of its products in the GCC and other Asian countries.”
Al Rashid said the company would introduce two new products, namely stretch-hood and stretch film.
It received the ISO 9001:2000 certification for quality management systems from Bureau Veritas Quality International.
QPPC recently completed an expansion project that involved installations of a co-extrusion blown film line, a flexographic printing facility and an additional warehouse capable of storing more than 1,500 tonnes of raw materials.
“QPPC is the first in Qatar to transform polyethylene into industrial packaging products,” said Al Rashid. The company uses 2,900 tonnes of LDPE (low density polyethylene) and 1,600 tonnes of linear low-density polyethylene. Qapco, one of the shareholders of QPPC, supplies LDPE to the factory.
The company has an approval certificate from the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation, also known as Kahramaa, for polyethylene blue sleeving, which enables it to supply to all government projects in Qatar and the rest of the GCC. The value of permeability to water vapour is reported in the analysis certificate.
The company makes construction foil from “first choice virgin raw materials” and from recycled materials. It has won approval for the product from the Qatar General Organisations for Standards and Metrology. Customers for the foil are contracting and bricklaying companies and its mechanical properties follow the ASTM D4397 standard. The value of permeability to water vapour is reported in the analysis certificate, The product is available as per standard specifications or to the special requirements of the customer.
The greenhouse and agricultural films can be additivated with different types of UV absorbers and stabilisers in accordance with the customer’s needs. The films can be neutral or greenish and can be prepared with anti-fog and IR additives. The foil for mulching applications can be white or black.  The product is manufactured as per the ASTM D4397 standard. The value of the permeability to water vapour is reported in the analysis certificate.
The company’s FFS film can be used on fully automatic or semi-automatic packaging lines. It is possible to do embossing or print antiskid. Its shrink film comes in a tubular shape for shrink lines used for covering palletised products and colours can be added.
For heavy-duty trash bags, the company has won approval from the Qatar Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture. The Qatar General Organisations for Standards and Metrology has endorsed its general-purpose foil made from recycled material.
Al Rashid said recent developments in petrochemical industries in Qatar would further boost the company’s growth and make it one of the biggest plastic converters in the region in the next five years.
Owners of the company shares are Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco), Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company (Qimco) and Febo, an Italian company, each holding a third of the stock. Commercial production began in August 2000.
