Network cabling wizard

Avaya Inc, the global provider of communications networks and services for businesses, has announced that its Systimax GigaSpeed XL solution has been named ‘Network Cabling System of the Year’ at the UK’s 2003 networking industry awards.

“The decision was based on the system’s design excellence and high-performance that underpins organisations’ communications infrastructures such as those for Avaya’s customers, BAE Systems and BP,” Avaya said.

The award was presented to John McCarthy, managing director for Avaya’s Connectivity Solutions business in Northern Europe at a gala dinner on the first day of the ‘Networks for Business’ event. More than 800 guests from the network cabling industry attended the event.

McCarthy commented that extensive research and development from Avaya Labs went into making the Systimax GigaSpeed XL system a world leader. He said structured cabling had a central role to play in the future of networking and business communication - particularly as voice and data converged.

Jane Murphy, portfolio director of networks for business, commented on behalf of the judges: “Avaya’s Systimax Gigaspeed XL solution won the award for two reasons. Firstly, through research, design and development, the performance of the system had been enhanced significantly - and is way ahead of what was thought attainable a few years ago. Secondly, the benefits of the system have been proven in organisations such as BAE Systems and BP.”

The success of the Systimax GigaSpeed XL system is credited to its superior connector and cable design and improved manufacturing precision which increased dramatically the performance of copper cabling for organisations. New modal decomposition and simulation techniques developed at Avaya Labs were used in the development of the GigaSpeed XL system. With significant improvement in all key electrical parameters such as ACR, Next, PSNext, Elfext and Return Loss, the GigaSpeed XL system provides improved performance for organisations beyond the Category 6/Class E industry-standard specification as well as additional design and installation flexibility. Forty-one patents have been granted on innovations that have helped the GigaSpeed XL system achieve a breakthrough in copper cabling performance.

Avaya designs, builds and manages communications networks for more than 1 million businesses worldwide, including 90 percent of the Fortune 500.
