STUDENTS of the University of Bahrain (UOB)’s College of Engineering sat through a lecture on Alba’s fire prevention systems and watched a practical demonstration of a fire fighting and rescue exercise during their visit to the Alba plant.
Chief executive Laurent Schmitt said the visit was an opportunity for Alba to share experiences it gained over the years and which have made it one of the world’s leading smelters.
Also recently, Alba completed a month-long summer training programme at its plant for a group of young Bahrainis to give them the opportunity to gain practical work experience and acquire skills to boost their employability.
Alba’s chief support functions officer Basem Al Sharqi presided over the closing ceremony of the Alba Annual Summer Training Programme and handed certificates.
As part of the programme, the students did their internship in the following departments: accounting, carbon, casthouse, environment, internal audit, investor and public relations and marketing. They received training in business ethics and enterprise in action, environmental issues and safety, interview skills and CV writing.
Alba also completed a Heat Stress Management Programme which it said defined the accountabilities of each management level in preventing heat stress. It included heat level indicators, and provided a daily heat stress index with practical tips on how employees can protect themselves.
Coordinators from Alba’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department along with personnel from the Alba Health Care Centre were closely involved in conducting a series of heat stress awareness sessions for Alba’s employees – across all departments – from May 22 to June 28.
