New X-ray system at Dammam port

Saudi Arabia’s Customs has introduced a high-energy transmission X-ray inspection system at the King Abdul Aziz Seaport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

American Science and Engineering (AS&E), a leading worldwide supplier of innovative X-ray detection solutions, in conjunction with Al Zamil Group, a global leader in industrial, petrochemical and service sectors, announced that the X-ray system will inspect cargo entering the port for security threats and contraband.

This is the first of several systems to be installed at port and land borders in Saudi Arabia. The system provides high penetration into inspected objects as it moves along rails over stationary vehicles and cargo.

Aramex voices uncertainty

Uncertainty remains at Aramex over the outlook for 2012 in light of sluggish global trade and instability in the Middle East, the company’s chief executive Fadi Ghandour said in a statement.

The company made a net profit of Dh57.2 million ($15.57 million) in the fourth quarter, up from Dh55 million in the corresponding period in 2010.

Revenue for the quarter reached Dh682 million, up 18 per cent from Dh580 million in the prior-year period. Profit for the year also increased by 4 per cent to Dh211.5 million.     

Ports and trade summit to be held

The future of shipping and its role in reviving the global economy will be discussed at length by leading maritime and trade experts at an upcoming ports and trade summit in Abu Dhabi.

The World Ports & Trade Summit 2012 will take place from April 2 to 4 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec).

Held in association with Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), the summit has attracted leaders in shipping and trade, including noted economists, investors, port operators, supply chain specialists and technology companies.

Mohebi plans facility in DWC

Mohebi Logistics, a leading distributor of global brands across the Middle East, said it will invest Dh350 million ($95.2 million) to build its new headquarters and logistics facility at Dubai World Central (DWC).

The DWC is part of the Dubai Government’s overall strategy to enhance the emirate’s transport and logistics services and capitalise on its geographical location to strengthen Dubai’s reputation as an international trading and commercial hub.
