Work begins on Shaw pipe unit

Work has begun on Shaw Group Inc’s state-of-the-art pipe prefabrication facility in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, the company announced.

Shaw Emirates Pipe Manufacturing LLC will construct and operate a 300,000 sq ft facility with the capability to support significant regional capital investments in the power and process industries.

Pipe prefabrication is the process of welding and fitting pipe and other components into custom systems by following design and scheduling requirements in a factory-controlled environment.

“As a worldwide leader in prefabricated piping systems, Shaw and its legacy of experience will benefit both new and existing customers in the Middle East,” a Shaw Group statement said. “Shaw’s model for pipe prefabrication has become the industry standard, one that results in greater quality, efficiency and, ultimately, significant cost savings for customers.”

When completed in 2011, Shaw’s newest facility will add to its existing pipe prefabrication capabilities in the Middle East. Since 1994, Shaw-Nass Middle East LLC in Bahrain has supplied piping systems for some of the world’s largest project owners and contractors in the region.

Supporting regional projects
“Significant large capital projects are under way in the Middle East that will impact the region’s infrastructure in multiple industries--nuclear power, water, refinery, petrochemical and chemical,” said JM Bernhard Jr, Shaw’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “As these projects proceed in the next several years, Shaw Emirates Pipe Manufacturing will have the capability to fully support these initiatives with world-class piping systems prefabricated to the highest quality.”

Shaw provides piping, structural steel and duct panel prefabrication and module prefabrication and assembly as well as pipe products and the world’s leading bending technology, for the power and process industries including nuclear, gas- and coal-fired power plants, oil extraction, pipeline, refining, petrochemical and chemical. Shaw creates total fabrication solutions through nine facilities worldwide that are equipped with the latest manufacturing technology.

The facilities are equipped with the latest manufacturing technology and production management systems.

Induction bending
A significant aspect of Shaw’s fabrication capabilities is induction bending. Because of the quality, accuracy, and savings, induction bending is the preferred alternative to traditional fit-and-weld procedures. Shaw is capable of bending pipes from 2 to 66 inches in diameter, with a wall thickness of up to 5 inches.

To ensure the overall quality of the finished materials, it manufactures and distributes specialty metal fittings used for piping systems fabrication, and produces pipe hangers and piping support systems for virtually any industrial environment around the world.

Shaw’s pipe fabrication facilities are capable of producing an aggregate of 35,000 pipe spools (10,000 tonnes of product) per month. The company has invested heavily in state-of-the-art equipment such as automated welding and bending machinery that speeds the fabrication process with greater accuracy and quality. Its international facilities are coordinated under an integrated fabrication management system.

The company has developed proprietary computer applications for design, interface, material control, production scheduling and fabrication management.
