Three Gulf states — Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates — have reaffirmed their solidarity with Kuwait following Iraq’s submission of maritime coordinates and maps to the United Nations, which they say infringe on Kuwait’s sovereign rights.
In separate statements, the three countries expressed concern over the lists of coordinates and maps filed by Iraq, warning of their potential implications for Kuwait’s maritime areas and elevations, including Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij (also referred to as Fisht Al-Eid and Fisht Al-Eij).
Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was closely monitoring the developments and categorically rejected any claims that undermine Kuwait’s full sovereignty over its maritime areas and elevations. Qatar similarly affirmed its full support for Kuwait, describing the Iraqi submission as an infringement of Kuwaiti waters and maritime rights.
The UAE, in a statement carried by the state news agency Emirates News Agency (WAM), expressed deep concern and reiterated its backing for all measures undertaken by Kuwait to safeguard its legitimate rights and national interests.
All three countries urged Iraq to adhere to the principles of international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and to respect existing bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding signed with Kuwait. They also called for the issue to be addressed through constructive dialogue and diplomatic channels, in a manner that preserves regional security and stability.
