Sipchem PBT plant begins start-up phase

May 2015

A POLYBUTYLENE terephthalate (PBT) plant of a Sipchem affiliate has begun its initial start-up in Jubail Industrial City, Sipchem announced.

The plant, first of its kind in the Middle East, is operated by the affiliate Sipchem Chemical Company. It will produce 63,000 tonnes of PBT, which is one of the highly specialised polymers used in the automotive industry and in the production of electrical and electronics materials. It is also utilised in the production of materials used in the IT field, polymers and engineering plastics industry.

The start-up of the PBT plant concurrently with the commissioning of the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant is an important step forward in Sipchem’s scheduled expansion and growth programme, said Ahmad A Al Ohali, chairman of Sipchem Chemical Company.

Sipchem’s specialised products come within its strategy to increase the value of products through implementation of integrated downstream projects using the company’s existing products, he said.

Butanediol is produced by Sipchem affiliate International Diol Company and is the main feedstock for producing polybutylene terephthalate. The development enables Sipchem to gain from its integrated products range and strengthen the value-added chain.
